Hello guys! Today I´m going to review one of the books that I read during June, Aristotle and Dante discovers the secrets of the universe. So yeah, let´s get started!
Title: Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe
Author: Benjamin Alire Sáenz
“Aristotle is an angry teen with a brother in prison. Dante is a know-it-all who has an unusual way of looking at the world. When the two meet at the swimming pool, they seem to have nothing in common. But as the loners start spending time together, they discover that they share a special friendship—the kind that changes lives and lasts a lifetime. And it is through this friendship that Ari and Dante will learn the most important truths about themselves and the kind of people they want to be.”
My thoughts on the book:
I´m not completely sure about how I should review this book. The thing is, that this book dosen´t really have a “plot”: it´s about a boy and his struggles in life but there isn´t any specific problem or event that the whole book centers around. It´s just about a normal teenage boy´s life and thoughts and struggles. And to my surprise, I actually really liked that.
I really connected to both of the main characters, Aristotle and Dante and could really identify with them. Both of them felt so real and the character development was beautiful. You can really see the difference between the 15 year old Ari that you meet in the beginning of the book and the 17 year old Ari that you say goodbye to in the end of it. You can really see how he develop and change as he grow older and get to know more people. And Dante is just wonderful, you can´t anything but love him.
The diversity was also really beautiful, featuring a mostly POC cast and multibly LGBTQ+ characters. +It´s a own voices book which always is great.
Another thing that I really loved with this book was the beautiful family dynamics. We don´t see beautiful family relationships in YA books very often, most of the time, the parents are either death or absent so it was really nice with some variety. Both Ari and Dante has such beautiful relationships with their parents. Sure, they have some struggles (just as most family have) but it´s so clear that Ari and Dante´s parents really care about them and yeah, they´re just really beautiful people who has such a strong and beautiful relationship to their sons.
The only thing that I felt could have made the book better is having chapters with Dante as the narrator too and not only chapters from Ari´s point of view. I also kind of felt like I wanted to know so much more when the book ended. BUT we are getting a sequel which is really exciting so hopefully we´ll get chapters from Dante´s point of view and I´ll get answers on my questions then.
Overall, this book was really adorable and fast paced with wonderful characters and lots of diversity. It´s a perfect book to read during the summer and i highly recommend it to everyone!
